What is a Limit Order?
A Limit Order is a type of order used in option trading with cryptocurrencies. It is a command given to an exchange platform to buy or sell a cryptocurrency when it reaches a specific price. The significant point of a Limit Order is that you, as the trader, can set both the price at which you want to buy or sell, and the quantity of the cryptocurrency you want to trade.
How Does a Limit Order Work?
In a Limit Order, the trader sets the 'limit price', which is the maximum or minimum price they are willing to buy or sell their cryptocurrency for. If you're a buyer, the order gets executed when the market price drops to your limit price or lower. As a seller, your order gets executed when the market price rises to your limit price or higher. Because of the specific price target, there is always a risk that the trade will not execute if the price does not reach the set limit. This makes a Limit Order more selective and less immediate than a Market Order.
Why Use a Limit Order?
Using a Limit Order allows traders to have better control over their trades. They can define the price point and mitigate the risks of market volatility. Especially in the field of cryptocurrency option trading, where prices can fluctify heavily, a Limit Order provides a safeguard against buying or selling at a price that is less favorable than desired. However, it’s always good to remember that while a Limit Order guarantees the price, it does not guarantee the execution of the trade.
Limit Order Versus Market Order
The Limit Order is often compared to a Market Order, another common type of order. The key difference is in timing and price. While a Market Order is designed to execute as quickly as possible at the current market price, a Limit Order risks not executing in exchange for hopefully achieving a specific price. Therefore, a Limit Order is typically preferred when the trader has a certain price in mind and is willing to wait until the market reaches that point.
